In Namibia, traces of German history can be found almost everywhere—place names, street names, and personal names that point to German ancestry. Reservations related to the colonial past and the atrocities committed by German troops in the early 20th century are rarely encountered today. People are far more preoccupied with the realities of social inequality.

Positive German legacies include not only Black Forest cake in Swakopmund, but also, in a broader sense, the dual vocational training system - combining classroom education with practical training under one roof - such as at the National Institute for Mining and Technology (NIMT).

mates4health believes that education is the only sustainable path out of poverty. This is especially true for so-called “dropouts” - people who have, quite literally, fallen out of society. In Keetmanshoop, more than 50 individuals live on the local landfill. Without access to water or electricity, they try to survive by selling whatever reusable materials they can find. Among them are young people with no school diploma or vocational training, as well as young single mothers who had to leave school due to pregnancy.

During one of the visits of Prof. Netz with Sr. Ottilie, he met several of these young people. They left a very motivated impression and expressed a strong desire to seize an opportunity for education. Sr. Ottilie, who regularly provides food and fruit drinks to the people living at the landfill together with a group from the Secular Institute of St. Francis de Sales (with the women doing the shopping and preparing sandwiches), succeeded in securing funding for vocational training placements at NIMT.

A project based in Namibia

For the young single mothers living at the landfill, childcare had to be arranged so they could attend training courses full-time. While schooling in Namibia is free, parents must cover the costs for kindergarten and preschool. Sr. Helena Kasiku Simuku SMIC - an equally dedicated nun and an impressive personality, as well as a close friend of Sr. Ottilie - runs a kindergarten. Through this connection, it was possible to secure places for ten young children and to cover the associated costs (450 Namibian dollars, approximately 25 EUR per month).

The necessary funds were made available through the generous support of Hubert Thaler, board member of the Werner Reichenberger Foundation. All children supported through this initiative successfully achieved their learning goals and were promoted to the next level - provided that continued funding can be secured.

“Our” trainees are currently learning various skilled trades. During a visit to NIMT, their instructors expressed great satisfaction with their progress. Their overall educational achievements are very promising.

Both the children’s celebration at the inauguration ceremony and the visit to the trainees were deeply moving experiences and confirmed the value of these support measures, which should be continued.

Thanks to the donations entrusted to us, we were able to offer adolescents and young adults a real perspective beyond life on the landfill - and to give young children a better start in life.

The reward? Gratitude, first successes, and a child’s smile.

At mates4health, we place strong emphasis on personal commitment and local ownership. We encourage partners to first identify a locally relevant need, then develop a solution rooted in local capacities and initiative, and finally translate this idea into a project proposal. Our role is to support motivated partners in implementing well-founded ideas not to define projects based on available funding alone.

We look forward to hearing your idea!

Be the change that you wish to see in this world.
