Project 'Student4Student'
Bridging Gaps to Empower Futures.
Student4Student is an initiative based on the concept of "helping people to help themselves", aiming to empower medical students in Ethiopia through financial support for their education. However, this project is not about one-sided charity. It is about creating a mutual partnership between students across borders, where financial contributions from students in Germany help to create more opportunities for their peers in Ethiopia. This exchange is based on shared values and mutual respect, with a focus on equal empowerment and collaborative growth.
By participating in this project, German students are not just providing financial support - they are engaging in a global learning exchange where all participants contribute to a collective goal of creating educational equity.
Student4Student supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 10: Reduced Inequality and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by creating a framework of shared responsibility and collective action.

Students we currently support

mates4health continues to support the first 10 medical students in Mekelle at the Ayder University for the second half of the year 2026.
Nikolaus Haas was invites as a speaker to the annual PASCAR meeting that took place in Addis Abbaba at the end of July 2026. He then expanded his visit and met the team in Mekelle. Charlotte Foltin – a young enthusiastic medical doctor who applied for a internship supported by mates4health – will spend 3 months in Ayder to support the local team. The two doctors met the Ethiopian students supported by the students4students program; here they were informed about the students projects and the personal experiences of the students so far.

My name is Tuemay Gebremedhn, and I am from Ethiopia, Tigray (western zone). From an early age, I have been passionate about education and eager to learn. My dedication to education helped me achieve several milestones, including being admitted to Kallamino Special High School(boarding school), and achieving a high score in the national university entrance examination. Along the way, I faced different challenges, but overcoming them taught me the importance of perseverance and hard work. My pre-university journey helped me become more disciplined, sociable, and resilient. These experiences have played an important role in shaping who I am today as a medical student in the pre-clerkship one program at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. In the future, I hope to become a good and competent doctor by building on my strengths and gaining deeper medical knowledge and practical experience. I also hope to continue learning from advanced medical institutions and use what I learn to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

The mates4health program is very meaningful to me because it can support me in continuing my medical education and help reduce some of the financial challenges I face, even if the support isn't enough with the economic inflation. I also look forward to sharing experiences with medical students from other universities and, if possible, having opportunities to further deepen my medical knowledge through advanced educational experiences.
